Our Review
The Gift of Love is a beautifully crafted Christmas story.  The art is extremely well done, and the story is well told.  Based on the Biblical account of the birth of Jesus, the narrative and characterization are simple and clear.  My 8-yr-old, MrCutie, enjoyed the story of the video, even responding to the narrator’s questions.  We all liked that it was a nice short video, with art lessons included in the special features. The DVD is visually stunning, with gorgeous chalk art for illustrations.  A few of the images made us all say, “WOW!” including the heavenly host visiting the shepherds.

We have an artist in the house – BudBud goes to an Integrated Arts school where art of all kinds is included in every area of teaching. So he appreciated and enjoyed the art lessons segment of the Gift of Love DVD.  He understood what the teachers were talking about and could easily use the techniques they described.  (I’ll have to see if I can get a picture of one of his projects!)  The lessons were clear for elementary-aged children, and yet detailed enough to provide excellent pictures.

The art concepts of line and shape, color, value, tint, contrast and lighting were used in the instruction.  I appreciated that part, as it was more than a “let’s draw a picture together” exercise, but a real art lesson.  Most of the supplies needed for the projects are things we already had on hand – colored paper, colored pencils, regular pencil, and eraser. The option for using florescent chalk or colored pencils is also included, and being able to use a black-light to add a whole new dimension to the artwork is very fun indeed. (The same technique was seen in the DVD itself, where a picture appeared to be just drawn with chalk, but the picture changed when black light was applied to it, for dramatic effect.)

I would say that the ‘film’ part of the DVD is best suited to younger elementary school children, and the art lessons will work for just about anybody with basic art skills.

My kiddos enjoyed The Gift of Love on DVD very much, and we’ll probably pull it out a few times each Christmas season.  I know BudBud will be going back to the DVD from time to time to check out the art lessons as well!
