Using the circle chart provided at the end of this section (which in my binder in hard copy in my hand, but NOT in this blog), do the following steps in order:

  • Saturate this whole process in prayer.
  • Rate your level of satisfaction in each of the life areas shown. A ten (10) means fantastic and you can’t imagine anything better. A zero (0) means it’s in the toilet and you can’t imagine things any worse in that area. Once you’ve completed rating each life area, connect the dots to form your circle of life.
  • Look at how each area of your life looks in relation to the other and ask God which life area He wants you to focus on.
  • With that life area in mind, what do you believe God wants for you? What does it look like? Write it down or find a picture that represents it.
  • List who God wants you to be in order to move you closer to His vision for you in this area of your life?
  • Make a list of things you could do to move you there.
  • From the list, choose one thing you will do this week.
  • Accountability is important to moving us forward. Tell someone about your commitment and what you will do to let them know you’ve done what you said you’d do this week.
  • Saturate this whole process in prayer.

This is also a wonderful exercise to use in many different ways with someone or a group of people you may be helping to move forward.

The areas listed are: Intellectual Growth, Health & Fitness, Finances, Spiritual Growth, Ministry/Career, Home & Family, Friends & Fun, and Spouse/Romance.

Insights gained:

The 2 life areas I felt the Lord wanting me to focus on were: –> Health & Fitness –> Home & Family
Health & Fitness jumped out for obvious reasons – I’ve been dealing with health issues pretty seriously for the last 5 years at least. It ranked the lowest on my “level of satisfaction” meter.

Home & Family was NOT ranked the next lowest, though. So I was a bit surprised that it should be a focus area over a few others.

But the whole of this exercise offered a few surprises along the way. I usually know when I’m really hearing the Lord, and not just making things up, when the things coming to mind could obviously and completely NOT be my own thoughts, and I’m a bit surprised by them ‘popping’ up there. Some of my suprises I marked below with an *.

I still have the last 3 steps to finish – listing things to do to move me ‘there’; choose one thing to do from that list; tell someone.

Life Area: Health & Fitness
What God wants for me in this area and what does it look like:
—-> To take care of the body I’ve been given
—-> eating well in spite of limitations
—-> keep moving in some way
—-> continue to pursue proper and appropriate care
—-> keep learning about my conditions and how to improve them

Who God wants me to BE to move closer to this vision:
–> light-hearted *
–> flexible
–> creative & inventive
–> involved in the process
–> an advocate & encourager for myself and others
–> responsible for my own part
–> open-handed *
–> hopeful

Life area: Home & Family
What God wants for me in this area and what does it look like:
—-> To be engaged and involved in positive ways
—-> training kiddos
—-> loving my husband
—-> involving the children WITH my “work” more and more

Who God wants me to BE to move closer to this vision:
–> encouraging
–> positive
–> firm but gentle
–> unselfish
–> willing *
–> open-minded
–> available/present
–> more calm
–> more patient
–> content
–> creative
–> caring & compassionate

In both areas, what God wants for me and who I need to be were not all things that are NOT currently happening. Lots of them are already there, and were affirmed. Some need to be improved upon, some need to be added altogether because they aren’t there at all.

I’ll get to the other steps soon.
