A year ago today my sweetie and I were sworn in as Canadian Citizens! It was the (nearly) final step in a very long process. We came to Canada in 1998, always assuming we’d go ‘home’ back to the States.
God had other plans for us, and now, 12 years later, we’re still here, and Canada is our chosen home.
We’ve retained our American Citizenship, so we are dual citizens. And we’re still very American in some ways (I think that it’s in our blood!). But, being that we had only been married about 11 months when we moved to Canada, most of our ‘adult life’ has been lived here in Canada, and we’re very Canadian in some ways too.
Happy Canadianaversary to us!
(not to be confused with our Canadaversary, mind you…)
Congrats! I have to decided at some point if I want to go for my Canadian citizenship. When you have dual do you still have to fill out US tax forms every year (that is a TOTAL pain!).
Congrats! Yay for deciding to formally stick around up here.
Whether you are a Canadian PR or a Citizen, as long as you maintain US citizenship you have to fill out the tax forms. 🙂 Some of the sticky points of Dual citizenship – taxes and the draft, and some interesting things about travel, too! Thankfully our income isn't high enough to have to pay taxes in the States as well, but we do have to submit the forms.
Living here 12 years and having had the opportunity to go 'back' the States a couple of times, but feeling very much like this is where we're supposed to be, made it important to us to make the decision to be dual.
Mommycrat – the formal decision was made quite a while ago, when we filed for Permanent Resident (PR) status. We could have continued like that ad-nauseum. lol! But we took the plunge, and we're glad we did. I get to vote for the first time as a Canadian soon. WOOT!
