Remember that song “Video Killed the Radio Star”?
Well, in my case, it’s more like “Facebook Killed the Casual Blogger”…
In the days before I had my own It’s OK to be WEIRD Facebook Page, I might have had a particularly interesting thought that I would probably have actually written a blog about. I would likely have put some energy into it, even, fleshing out my thought into 200-300 words.
It was good for my soul and my brain to write, and I loved blogging. I still do love blogging, actually.
BUT…
It’s so easy to post a 1 or 2 sentence stating my interesting thought as a quick update on my blog Facebook Page.
Those quick Facebook posts have almost killed my blog.
Now, the Facebook Page was intended to be another avenue to share weirdness with the world, and to create a community of fantastic weirdies, and perhaps bring more people to the blog itself (which it has done and continues to do!). It was never intended to replace this It’s OK to be WEIRD blog, though.
I’m really missing my blog outlet, and let’s be honest – some weirdness in life just can’t adequately be captured in 2 or 3 sentences on Facebook. Some of those particularly random thoughts just can’t be developed in a quick status update.
Even while Facebook almost killed my blog (the writing of the blog posts, anyway), it’s also sparked some great conversations. I hope to bring some more of that to my blog posts – interesting, weird, and yes, often very random! You wouldn’t expect any less, right?
SO, I’m reviving the languishing blog, turning the tables ,and using its would-be killer as an infusion of life and energy.
Ha! Take that, Facebook! LOL!
Have you found a similar experience with Facebook or Twitter adversely affecting your blog writing? I’m interested to know… because, yah, it could just be weird old me. 🙂
Ha! I read the title and was totally expecting a post about the new graph search and how it almost killed your page and blog hits… guess not! 😉
But I get you on this post, I totally do! Micro-blogging on Twitter and Facebook once killed my blog, but I’m SO happy I finally got back into it! Glad to see you are, too. Can’t wait to read more!
Facebook has definitely caused me to take what would usually be a post and turn it into a status update. I almost gave up my blog because of it, but I’m glad I didn’t.
I have the same issues sometimes, getting side tracked and paying more attention to Facebook and Twitter when I should be blogging lol slowly started to get back to the blog. It’s way too easy to get distracted with Social Media! Sometimes you need to only have your site window open and nothing else. I find that helps to focus more 🙂
