Welcome to Weird Wednesdays, hosted by It’s OK to be WEIRD!
Being a dual citizen with 2 sets of holidays to celebrate is kinda weird!
In Canada we have Thanksgiving in October. As Americans we also celebrate American Thanksgiving in November. We get 2 Thanksgivings and I love that!
But because there’s nothing between Halloween and Christmas (except Remembrance Day – which is like Veteran’s Day) in Canada, November 1st is the beginning of the holiday season here. We jump right into the holidays!!
WAIT! Put the brakes on! Slow down!
I barely got my harvest decorations put up. I hardly get to even think about fall before we’re already moving into ‘winter’ themes.
Every fibre of my being has a hard time with this. I’m used to having Thanksgiving as the spring board to the holidays. That doesn’t happen with Thanksgiving in October, so I, myself, am comfortable to wait to until after American Thanksgiving. But everything around here is already running head long into Christmas.
I know that even in the States there are stores already decked out with Christmas things. But it’s not quite holiday time for you guys until Thanksgiving (i.e. the END of November, NOT November 1st!).
So, I’m very much Canadian in many ways, but in this way I’m still deeply American. And yes, that’s a bit weird!
Since this is my chosen home, I’ll have to learn to deal with it, but I am not sure I’ll ever get fully used to it – kind of like I feel about short summer holidays and having School in June.
Officially, then, I suppose it’s appropriate to say, “Happy Holidays!” But I’m sure you’ll pardon me if I refrain from those greetings until it’s closer to December. 🙂
