My sweetie and his dad just got back from up in Northern Alberta. They were gone for a week and had a great trip.
And they brought back 406 lbs of moose to fill our freezer!
Dad worked hard to put things in place so that he could come up from the States to go on this hunt with my sweetie. It was their first moose hunt, and I’m really glad they got to do it together.
There were 4 other guys with them, including another dad with his 2 younger sons (20 and 11 yrs old). My sweetie was the only one to get a moose this trip and his dad was with him when he shot it. They were both excited about that.
This goes in the history books as another amazing hunt for these guys. They’ve been hunting together for everything from prairie dogs to pheasants, dove to deer, elk to ducks, and now they can add moose to that list.
The other dad that I mentioned who was up with his 2 boys also took the opportunity to bond with his sons. It’s one of the first hunts his youngest son has gone on, and what a trip it was for those guys. The three of them together making some fantastic memories together.
Making good memories with milestone events like this is very important for families. Spending this kind of time together adds some cement to the relationships. Driving the miles together, sleeping in the same tents, walking in the rain together, cooking and eating the same meals, and getting stuck in the same mud together can provide some great memories as well as opportunities for learning about who the other people are. That kind of experience is priceless.
Not everybody is in to hunting. Maybe it’s fishing (which my sweetie and I and his parents and our kiddos all like to do together), or a specific sport, or biking, or quading, or mountain climbing… taking the time away from every day life to get out on an excursion of some kind with your family is worth doing. Those kind of outings punctuate family life, adding meaning and depth of relationships that you can’t always get in the routine of every day life together.
Now, as a family, we’re all taking part in the processing (nice word for ‘butchering’) of the meat, so we can freeze it. The big guys (my sweetie and his dad) are doing the bulk of the cutting, but the kiddos and are do our fair share, and the actual packaging of the meat. Things like our KitchenAid Food Grinder attachment make this process so much easier, but no less messy. Grinding the meat is definitely something that the kiddos can help with, and requires no contact with knife blades or much risk of injury (that’s the part I like). The whole process makes for great learning opportunities, and working together like this always makes for interesting memories!
I’m looking forward to having moose to eat through the winter, and to hearing my sweetie and his dad sharing the stories about the moose hunt for many years to come.
