Please join me in praying for Australia, as they prepare for the landfall of Severe Tropical Cyclone Yasi, now a Class 5 (the highest – worst – classification for cyclones). It is anticipated that it will hit land before 10pm local time.
They are saying that this is the largest cyclone Queensland has EVER seen, ever! The largest previous storm, Cyclone Terry (I believe) would fit in the EYE of TC Yasi. The eye of Yasi is 35km wide and will take an hour to pass. The destruction expected will be devastating, with winds topping 300km/hr and landfall corresponding with high tide, creating a huge storm surge (6-7 meters, or 18-25 ft, ABOVE highest tide).
To give you an idea of scale, this is a picture of Yasi superimposed (placed over) the United States:

This is HUGE!!!! Another comparison shows the USA, the UK, and Australia next to Yasi over at joannenova.com.au. Did you ever see the movie “The Perfect Storm”? Not sure if that’s how Yasi has gotten to be as big as it is, but it’s definitely ENORMOUS and a perfectly terrible storm.
For more news about Yasi, check out Live Yasi Updates on news.com.au and the Cyclone Yasi Update Page on Facebook.
It’s going to be a long night in Oz, with a long storm season still ahead.
Please pray with me – for those who have been evacuated, for those who are buckled down ready to bear the brunt of the storm in their homes, and for all of Queensland that is still cleaning up from devastating floods earlier this storm season.
