We’ve had a tradition of having a huge water fight on either July 1st or 4th, depending on which country we happen to be in for the celebration. This year, though we were in Canada, I didn’t feel like having a water fight. I still wanted to do something FUN and memorable, though. We had slept in on July 4th, so my original idea of a Silly String Shoot Out at High Noon was kibosh-ed (sp?). Instead, just after lunch, I presented the kiddos with this challenge:

Duel Notice
The challenge reads:

NOTICE
On this Independence Day, the 4th day of July,
in the year Two-Thousand and Eleven,
at approximately 8:00pm in the evening,
a Gentleman’s and Gentlewoman’s Duel
is to take place.
Where: Home of the Honorable Reverend
in the backyard
The Duel shall be a Silly String Duel!
Silly String will be provided.
Please plan to wear appropriate attire
(Western Wear is suitable)

OH BOY!  Was that ever FUN!  The challenge was rolled up as a scroll and issued via “Special Delivery” (tossing down the stairs while yelling “SPECIAL DELIVERY!”) The kiddos got a big kick out of it, even getting in costume when they marched up to me to ‘formally accept the challenge’!

The duelling itself didn’t end up lasting very long, as the customary “start back-to-back, take 5 (or 4 or 3) paces, then turn and shoot” duelling procedure was not working well with silly string – it just wouldn’t reach far enough.  Soon, all-out silly string war broke out and we all had evidence of being involved in the fight.  We each had our own color of silly string so it was easy to tell who had ‘shot’ whom! It was fantastic!  We had such good fun!

Was this Cheap Summer Fun!? You bet.

Well, pretty cheap. Depending on how much Silly String costs where you are, it might be less cheap.  We’ve seen it at Dollar Stores before, but the cheapest we could find this time was $2.00 per can x 3 cans each x 5 people = $30.

The silly string fight lasted less than an hour, but with the ‘calling of the duel’ and the anticipation that it built while they all prepared their costumes for the duel, it was a whole afternoon of fun! And of course, PRICELESS memories!
