Welcome to Weird Wednesdays, hosted by It’s OK to be WEIRD!

I, for one, am all for letting animals be animals. They are, after all, very good at it, in general.

But in New Zealand, the combination of smelly birds and transplanted mammals is making for a weird, and not quite natural, or good, situation.

According to Discovery News.com, the birds are at a diSTINKed disadvantage. 🙂

The native birds in New Zealand, including the cutest ever kiwi bird, are being their own smelly animal selves.  Mammals (predators) that have been introduced to the island – there are no native mammals – are also being their own smelling animal selves. That combination means that the predators are sniffing out the birds at an alarming rate.

As a result, the bird population is being devastated by introduced animals (like cats and stoats).

But, since the problem itself is as a result of humans bringing non-native animals onto the islands of New Zealand, the solution will have to come from humans as well.  And how do humans get rid of offensive body odors?  With deodorant!

The solution to the stinky bird problem may well be in the form of some mild bird-deodorant.

Who ever heard of  bird needing deodorant!?  Yup, that’s weird!

But it just might do the trick!
