um… I mean… Taking the Plunge – Twitter style!
I’ve signed up for Twitter, after the previous discussion here (read: peep pressure, er, peer pressure). I also had feedback from friends on Facebook about it, so I decided to go for it. At least to give it a try.
First off, my 2 obvious first choices for username were already used. How frustrating is that? Even more than that, my favorite name belongs to someone who has NEVER even tweeted – it’s an inactive account, just sitting there doing nothing with MY username. Sheesh! Maybe that would have been a good reason to have signed on sooner – to be sure to get MY name… oh well….
I finally did get a username that wasn’t already taken and still suits me – OKtobeWEIRD.
OH wow, this Twitter thing is a new world with new lingo. Whoever came up with this is very clever, obviously. The new words are fun and funny (not even new words some of them, just used in a new way). It gets me a little tongue-tied and trying to make every day words into “Twitter Speak”.
If you’re already into Twitter, forgive me for sharing a few details. It’s all still neet to meep, er, new to me! 🙂
On Twitter, you write little updates or messages called Tweets.
I’ve now been called a Tweep, which, as far as I can tell, seems to be the thing to call someone who uses Twitter. Not to be confused with a peep, which is often what i call my online friends – short for people maybe? – and certainly don’t call people on Twitter “twits”. How rude…
In my sidebar on Twitter there is a “Trending” block – apparently things that are popular and getting “tweeted” about a lot at the moment.
Then, of course, there are the #s and the @s and the RTs that keep showing up in tweets. I’ve got the RTs and the @s figured out (RT = retweet and @ is how you ‘tag’, or mention and link to, another tweep in your tweet), but I’m not sure about the #s yet…. it appears to be maybe something to do with just keywords and often shows up in the Trending section.
Also, you don’t ‘friend’ someone in Twitter, like you would in Facebook or other social networking sites. In Twitter, you “follow” people – and you don’t even have to be their friend! (Isn’t that like stalking?)
So, if you’re on Twitter, I’ll try not to consider you a ‘friend’ if you ‘follow’ my ‘tweets’. You’ll also excuse me if I am a ‘twit’ even when I’m a ‘tweep’ (I’m sure I’m not the fweet, um, first!).
Happy Twittering! Or should that be “Happy Tweeting”? Anyway, see you around, tweeps, peeps, peoples, and friends!
