For Valentine’s this year, we had some fun with Valentine’s Cards, and I wanted to do a meal full of red things for dinner, just for fun. I’ve done this kind of thing before on Valentine’s Day, most recently on Chinese New Year, and for many holidays throughout the year.
I can’t have tomatoes or peppers…. shoot! How else am I going to get RED things!? Without massive amounts of food coloring….?
I decided that we would do breakfast for dinner, and have waffles with strawberries and red juice. That could work. Then I expanded on that theme.
Valentine’s Day Dinner: Red & White |
Waffles and strawberries just NEED whipped cream. So as I was whipping up the cream, Sweetheart suggested having PINK whipped cream. OK, so this is where a little bit of food coloring came into play.

So, let me tell you about the spread: red cloth napkins with white plates at the place settings, white handled cutlery, red Dixie cups, red serving plates, cranberry juice in a pitcher with a white lid, pink whipped cream, strawberries and waffles!
Sweetheart cooked the waffles while I worked on the whipped cream and sausages. She’s a BIG helper! It was fun to have her working with me in the kitchen that night.
Oh, I mentioned the sausages – Sweetie helped me cut our venison breakfast sausage into heart shaped patties (with a cookie cutter).

The boys helped set out all the stuff on the table, and BudBud made the juice (from frozen concentrate). MrCutie got the white plates out and set them on the table. So, this really was a family affair (to a slightly larger extent than a usual dinner where everyone helps anyway).
Just simple little things can be done to make an occasion like this festive.

Making memories like this together is easy – the meal wasn’t hard, though it did take a bit of thinking and making sure I had a few things ahead of time; all the ‘decorations’ were things I already have on hand (white plates, red cups, red plastic plates, etc.); snapping a few pics; enjoying the prep work together as a family.

These kinds of things make great photo opportunities – the colors and variety of things on the table is just a fun combination. And good photos always make for great memories later!
Family time like this really is a great way to share the love and the fun, on Valentine’s Day or whatever other occasion you decide to celebrate!
