Sweetie and I recently did the goofiest road trip we’ve ever done in our lives.

Now, remember…. I LOVE to road trip, with my hubby, with our family… I love seeing the sights, and I’ve never minded driving.  But this was the trippy-est road trip ever, and I’m not sure I’ll be repeating it any time soon.

Originally, the plan for Spring Break was to meet Sweetie’s parents sorta in the middle, somewhere in Wyoming, and we’d trade the kiddos with them.  The kiddos would then go to Camp Gram for their Spring Break, Sweetie would still be working so we’d come back home, and the following weekend we’d meet in the middle again to pick the kiddos up.

Plans changed here such that it became possible for us all to go all the way down to visit our family in the States over Easter. COOL!

Well, here was our itinerary….

Wednesday and Thursday: on the road all day, long days (12-14 hours) to get from our house to Gram’s house.

Friday, Saturday, Sunday: full schedule of visiting with family, running around (except Saturday, which wasn’t too bad), then Easter Sunday services, my daughter’s baptism on Easter Sunday afternoon, and a big party after that.

Custer's Headstone

General Custer's headstone, among others, on Last Stand Hill, Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday: Driving back home for Sweetie and I – it took an extra day because we took a different route to see some family who didn’t get to come down for the baptism, and we stopped early the 2nd day so we could watch the Canucks playing hockey on TV. This travel wasn’t quite as hard, as we slept until we woke up, didn’t have to drive too late, and stopped to see the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument on the last day.

Thursday: Sweetie had a wedding rehearsal to officiate.

Friday: Hang out day for us – went to a movie together.  Not a bad day at all!

Saturday: Sweetie performed a wedding in the evening and we watched Canucks on TV again! 😀

Sunday: Drove back down to Wyoming to meet the Grandparents and pick up the kiddos – not a bad drive in and of itself really.  However, Sunday night my youngest son was sick in the hotel room – throwing up and diarrhea – so Sweetie and I neither one slept much.

Monday: up early and on the road, in hopes of making it home in time to vote in our first Canadian Federal Election (we became citizens a year and a bit ago, and this was the first Federal Election since then) and to get BudBud back for soccer practice.  We drove hard all day – only stopping for potty breaks (and fuelling every time we stopped to save other stops) and eating on the road.  We made great time and got home with plenty of time to vote and almost made it for soccer practice too!

SO, in 12 days time, Sweetie and I were on the road for 7 whole days of driving. It was a total of 71 hrs 21 mins / 7428.30 kilometers (4,615.73 miles) – according to MapQuest.

Um, yah…. I’m so done with driving for a while!

Thankfully there were no breakdowns, no serious issues with the car or the kiddos (MrCutie seemed to be OK in the car after his night of throwing up in the hotel room), and we could just keep going.  I’m not even sure at this moment how much money we spent on fuel (EEK!) but we ate sandwiches and our own snacks rather than doing fast food, so that was helpful.

Next time, and every other time after that, we’ll be planning for stops along the way, to see and do things on the trip.

I’ll never go road tripping like this again!!
