Good clean movies are harder and harder to come by these days. Last night we watched one such movie that I would highly recommend – The Grace Card.

About The Grace Card

Everything can change in an instant … and take a lifetime to unravel. When Mac McDonald loses his son in an accident, the ensuing 17 years of bitterness and pain erodes his love for his family and leaves him angry with God … and just about everyone else. Mac’s rage stonewalls his career in the police department and makes for a combustible situation when he’s partnered with Sam Wright, a rising star on the force—who happens to be a part-time pastor and a loving family man.

Can they somehow join forces to help one another when it’s impossible for either of them to look past their differences—especially the most obvious one? Every day, we have the opportunity to rebuild relationships and heal deep wounds by extending and receiving God’s grace. Offer THE GRACE CARD … and never underestimate the power of God’s love.

My Review

Um… WOW!

My husband and I really like The Grace Card. It is a powerful and emotional story, with a clear gospel message about forgiveness and grace. The acting is first-rate, the cinematography is well staged, and the drama unfolding on-screen is very real and believable.

The Grace Card depicts the very different lives of two very different men. By flipping from Mac’s story to Sam’s story and back again, we are able to see how opposite these two guys really are. Mac is a cold, hard man, fixated seemingly on a debt that the world owes him due to his oldest son having been killed in a car accident, and mad at everybody around him because of it. Sam is a loving, caring family man, who is serving the Lord as a pastor ‘on the side’ and is focused on finding out what it is that God wants him to do, while sprinkling grace and love in all the lives he touches.

Addressing the ever-present issue of race, The Grace Card does a great job of showing the tension between the two men, without disrespecting either one of them. It’s easy to see how Mac has come to where he’s at, and you can’t fault him for his frustrations, even while he avoids conversation with his wife and has turned his back on God. Sam has his own issues with Mac, and we watch him wrestle with those issues throughout the film by going to the Lord and talking with his wife.

As I’m writing this, it seems to sound like these two characters are painted in broad black and white brush strokes (pun intended), but this isn’t trivialized or over-done in the movie. The differences are obvious, but the story moves along quickly enough not to dwell on any specific area, and so it doesn’t get hung up on any one difference or another.

For guys who like ‘cop shows’, The Grace Card delivers dramatic police action scenes. For women who enjoy heart-warming stories of reconciliation, you’ll also not be disappointed by The Grace Card. We laughed, and we cried (well, I cried..). While I think it’s a bit ‘big’ for my family yet, it is a great movie for families with teens. It’s a good watch!
